When I went to buy my first property on my own, I started with a deposit of under 3 per cent. So really I was stuck to begin with, because my lack of equity meant I could not see a way forward. I decided to get involved with B.Invested to figure out a proper strategy and to start moving in the right direction.

Once I took onboard their strategy, it really sort of skyrocketed from there. It opened my eyes to a completely new way of doing things. I didn’t see anybody else out there doing what Nathan was doing. I was all about negative gearing because that’s just what I was taught at school. At B.Invested they’re always three steps ahead of the game and they just knew what I had to do from the beginning to get the second and the third and the fourth property. It wasn’t just about getting the one loan, it was how is this going to affect my second and my third and my fourth purchase after that? It was about getting all of that in place and getting the fundamentals down pat before I could really kickstart my investing.

Goals

My initial goal was to help out my mum so she could retire and also so I could own my principal place of residence. I’ve been able to do that this year in terms of buying my own home and retiring my mum as well.

My focus now is being able to start dropping down hours at work, trying to make a little bit of a passive income out of my property and to eventually retire early.

Recommendations

My advice that I give to people new to investing in property is to just have a strategy to begin with. You really need to work out your goals and where you want to be and then just come up with a solid plan of how you’re going to get there. That’s the main thing. Once you have that plan in place, you just want to be working as hard as you can just to get those deposits together.
